Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon, is a sanctuary for the soul—a kingdom where ancient monasteries perch on forested hillsides, prayer flags dance in mountain breezes, and daily life flows to the rhythm of tradition and serenity. Here, happiness is measured not in wealth but in wisdom, peace, and community.
Bhutan is famous for its Gross National Happiness (GNH) philosophy, which prioritizes well-being over economic growth. It has unique approach to sustainable tourism. Other reasons include its stunning Himalayan landscapes, often called the “Last Shangri-La,” its rich, preserved Buddhism-infused culture and traditions. The economy of Bhutan is based on agriculture and forestry, which provide the main livelihood for more than 60% of the population. Agriculture consists largely of subsistence farming and animal husbandry. Rugged mountains dominate the terrain.
A warm welcome to Paro Valley
Paro valley is bordered by forested mountain peaks, a wide valley town in western Bhutan. It is the site of the country’s only international airport and is also known for the many sacred sites in the area.
North of town, the Taktsang Palphug (Tiger’s Nest) monastery clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley. Northwest of here are the remains of a defensive fortress, Drukgyel Dzong, dating from the 17th century.
