Losar 2025 (Wood female snake year)
Losar, the Bhutanese New Year is a time of renewal, reflection and celebration, marking the beginning of the Wood Female Snake Year on February 28. The word “Lo” means year and “Sar” means new, symbolizing a fresh start where we bid farewell to negativity and welcome prosperity, happiness and good fortune. It is a festival deeply rooted in Bhutanese culture filled with time-honored traditions, spiritual significance and joyful gatherings.
As Losar approaches, families across Bhutan prepare by thoroughly cleaning their homes not only to freshen their surroundings but also to clear away misfortune from the past year. This practice is believe to invite good luck and positive energy ensuring a prosperous year ahead. On the morning of Losar, people begin their day with prayers and offerings at temples and home altars seeking blessings for health, success and happiness. It is also a time for gratitude and togetherness as families gather to share delicious traditional meals, strengthening bonds and celebrating the joy of new beginnings. The aroma of suja (butter tea), dresi (sweet saffron rice) and phaksha paa (pork with radish) fills the air while laughter and conversation bring warmth to every home.
Beyond the family gatherings, Losar is a time of community celebration where people come together to participate in traditional sports and cultural activities. The most popular among them is archery (Bhutan’s national sport) where matches take place in villages and towns accompanied by friendly laugh and enthusiastic cheering. Other traditional games like khuru (dart throwing) and degor (a stone-throwing game similar to boules) add to the festive atmosphere. It is a time when people dress in their finest Ghos and Kiras, exchange well wishes and embrace the sense of unity and festivity that Losar brings.
